How to pick a sponsor |

| There is a saying that goes; "the teacher will appear when the pupil is ready", or something like that. This is something I've heard said in the rooms of AA and it resinated with me, just like lots of sayings I've heard. I believe God influences, cleverly perhaps, but somehow affects our direction if we have a small sliver of willingness. Alchoholism is an opportunity to be reborn, if you are willing. My God appointed sponsor, was probably the last person I ever thought I would choose. But I didn't choose, not really. I believe and feel like that was my burning bush as they say. Until about 2 weeks before I asked him to help me, he would of been at the bottom of a list of several hundred people that I got used to seeing every night at 6pm at our local AA club. I had heard him speak before, but this time it was different. This time, all my ego had evaporated in a heap of dispair and humility. The message arrived into my mind, directly from God that this was the person to take me through the steps. He did, I did and I'm sober and trying to carry the message. Since this type of spiritual experience may happen to you differently, I would not wait around for this moment. What I would do is pray about it. Pray for God to put somebody in your path that can take you through the steps. Look for someone who has at least some time, some recommend a year at least, but to be honest, I would say the more the better...at least the more experience they will have. That should mean more repetition and knowlege of the answers to our questions that are all in the big book, or in his or her experiences themselves. Good luck or better yet, God Bless. |
